With October half term just around the corner and Halloween creeping up on us there are lots of things to do on the island. Yes, autumn brings cooler days and the odd downpour, but it also brings some crisp, bright days and the perfect excuse to wrap up warm and explore.
So, whether you’ve got kids to entertain or you’re looking for inspiration for a solo date, we’ve got ideas to help you make the most of your free time. From pumpkin-filled adventures to coastal walks and creative indoor escapes, there’s something for everyone.
The crafting community is having a moment, so unplug and do something creative. From life drawing and pottery throwing to candle making and crochet there are lots of activities to choose from. Guernsey Arts keeps an updated list of workshops and classes to browse for inspiration. And, of course, it’s pumpkin season so head down to Le Hechet Farm or browse the island’s hedge veg stalls and get carving!
Get off the sofa and take in a film at the cinema. With bigger screens, better sound - and of course, popcorn! - it’s an easy way to escape for a couple of hours. Book your seats at The Mallard Cinema or enjoy a daytime screening for just £1 at Beau Cinema during half term.
Keeping the little ones entertained can be challenging - unless you know where to look! Oaty and Joey’s Playbarn and Le Friquet Garden Centre both have soft play areas and there’s always the pirate playground at Saumarez Park. Or try something different with this Halloween themed Roller Disco. For older kids, try crazy golf at Nineteen or indoor fun Iris and Dora. You can also stock up on materials for all ages at Craftwise or Creaseys Kids and get creative at home.
Guernsey Museum and Castle Cornet are bringing Halloween to life with haunted castle crafts, pumpkin trails and monster movies throughout half term. They’re wrapping up the week with Freaky Friday: Bailiwick Beasts, featuring goat encounters, witchy crafts, folklore performances, slime-making, bat workshops and sensory activities - and Freaky Friday admission is free if you arrive in fancy dress.
Wrap up and embrace the fresh air. Whether you prefer walking or cycling, there are endless ways to explore our islands. Even if you’ve lived here all your life, there’s always a hidden corner to discover - and why not round it off with coffee and cake.
From sunrise yoga in the pavilion to a Hot Haus sauna by the sea, there are lots of ways to enjoy The Bathing Pools - with or without a swim. It’s a great starting point for a stroll around the harbour or along the cliff paths, and we highly recommend a bacon roll with a sea view in the friendly café.
There’s lots going on for kids during half term at the library and it’s all free. We could focus on the books but - whatever your age! - there’s so much more to explore. Sit mindfully with a jigsaw, play a board game, colour for a while, join a meditation session or visit the Fab Lab and get creative.
Guernsey Arts keeps a calendar of concerts, gigs, exhibitions, theatre performances and community events happening across the Bailiwick. Keep an eye on their listings for live performances and creative inspiration.
Sometimes half term is about slowing down, so treat yourself to brunch with friends. But where to go? From casual cafés to classy hotels, we’re spoilt for choice. Whatever your style, you’ll find plenty of inspiration in our list of Places To Have Brunch in Guernsey.
Take a moment for yourself. Plan a solo date. Book a beauty treatment. Or go all out with a spa day at The OGH or St Pierre Park. Alternatively, creating a spa experience at home with music, candles, your favourite products and a good book can be just as restorative.
