8 Trends for 2023 You Need To Know About

People use Pinterest to plan for the future. They map out what to do, what to try and what to buy, using the platform as a stepping stone towards making their vision a reality. And, wonderfully, that behaviour gives Pinterest an insight into the global mindset and for the year ahead. They have reliably called the trends over the past few years - during arguably some of the most unpredictable years in recent times - with an impressive 8 out of 10 of their predictions proving true. So we think there's a pretty good chance they know what’s coming in 2023.

We've picked our favourites to share with you. From micro makeovers to writing therapy, primal movement and alternative ways to feel your feels, here are the trends to embrace this year. Let's dive in.

1.  Primal Movement

Fitness is getting back to basics in 2023, with a move away from high tech solutions as we put down our phones and prioritise posture. We'll be focusing on primal movements that combine the natural mobility and everyday stretches our bodies were made to embrace and looking for ways to improve our physical - and mental - wellbeing with strength and balance routines. Pilates ticks a lot of the primal movement boxes for both beginners and seasoned fitness enthusiasts. The list of benefits is extensive, from improved posture and flexibility to better strength, balance and endurance. If you still need to be persuaded, here's Why You Need To Try Pilates... & Where To Find Classes in Guernsey.

2.  Feeling All The Feels

We're looking for more ways to express ourselves in 2023 as people look beyond traditional talking therapies to find creative outlets to embrace their emotions. Pretty understandable given the rollercoaster ride we've all been on over the past few years. People are exploring various forms of writing therapy and art and creativity to as a way to clear their minds and find more productivity, clarity and calm in their lives. Expressive art and music therapy are also on the rise as we search out the best creative outlets to support our mental wellbeing.

3.  Focusing on the Fourth Trimester

People are becoming increasingly aware of the postnatal period of pregnancy as they look for ways to support new parents during the first few months immediately after giving birth. It’s a time of immense physical and emotional change for all involved and searches show that friends and family are looking for practical ways to show they care with postnatal hampers, new parent meals and new parent presents on the rise.

4.  Vitamin Sea

If you’ve been wondering about the health benefits of chlorophyll water or green algae, or you find yourself reaching for seaweed snacks, you are not alone. More and more of us are looking for inspiration from the sea and embracing some of the hottest new superfoods, which have been staples in Asian cultures for some time now. So search up Nori recipes or create a spicy salmon bowl to liven up your lunchbox and enjoy more ocean-based foods and minerals this year.

5.  Vintage Living

We'll be saying goodbye to minimalist styles this year, as we embrace sustainable living and honour older finds in our homes. We're looking for ways to make our space unique by turning our back on the mass-produced and looking for ways to combine vintage pieces - whether they’re cherished family antiques, quirky hand-me-downs or preloved finds - with modern styles for a chic, timeless look. Searches for eclectic interior design vintage are up 850% as we mix modern and antique furniture for a ‘hipstoric home’ that combines nostalgia with self expression.

6.  Micro Makeovers

Small beauty is on the rise, from micro manis to cropped bobs and chopped fringes, as people are looking for ways to reset and embrace a fresh start. Whether it’s hair or nails, it no longer has to be long and luscious to make a statement. We’re going back to basics with short French manicures and natural nails… and look out for barely-there bobs, with searches up 550%.

7.  Sober Curiosity

There’s a definite shift happening around alcohol, with more and more people joining the sober curious movement and rejecting the notion that nights out have to revolve around drinks. By all means have a drink if you want one, but it’s time to stop with the judgement if someone else prefers a mocktail or low alcohol alternative. This is reflected by the growing number of searches for ‘fancy non-alcoholic drinks’ and the growing choice of quality alcohol-free alternatives that have become available in bars, restaurants and shops in recent years.

8.  The YOLO Years

This is the year to celebrate the milestones in your life. From birthdays to anniversaries, this is the year to explore party ideas and plan a memorable event to mark the occasion. We’ll also be shifting away from the humble cupcake to epic cake decorations and thoughtfully decorated cookies. This trend is in part a reaction to the pandemic years as ‘normality’ has returned for the most part and we are determined to make the most out of life. Which is a brilliant reason to celebrate all the small things in our opinion. (Editor's Note from Tracey: It’s especially popular with those of us who are, shall we say, more mature… the more years, the more reasons to party!)
