Ultrarunner and Peloton instructor Susie Chan started running in her thirties and she now inspires thousands through her Peloton classes and her races. We met up with her at the Guernsey Literary Festival and she shared her wellbeing essentials with us.
I think I’d be a very different person if I hadn’t started running. I’m proud of my age and of coming into running at 35. I mean, it isn’t old, but it’s a little later in life and I absolutely embrace it. I like to get in a bit of movement every single day and I do a bit more yoga now. Now that I’m 50, some days it’s about simply managing to get out the door for a slow 20 minute run - other days, it’s a 50 mile race. It’s whatever you can be on that day. Be kind to yourself and don’t do the comparison thing - the saying that comparison is the thief of joy is so true. I’m proud of what I can do with my body at my age, so I keep doing it.
Now that I'm a bit older I’m very much trying to keep on top of those supplements. Collagen is the main supplement I've been taking recently because of my age and the benefits it has for my bones. So I try to take that daily.
I use an SPF cream on my face. I have a moisturiser which has it built in. And that again is mainly age-based. If I’m honest, I never for the first 48 years of my life, I didn't bother but now I’ve built in a little bit of SPF into my skincare routine.
I always have to have a little time to unwind in the evening. And that can involve anything from having a glass of wine while I’m watching something funny on TV, to reading a book and having a bit of peace and quiet. It’s just having that little buffer, because my job is quite intense and it takes a lot of energy. So I always need a little moment to unwind.
I'm very boring, I go to bed quite early. It can be hard to get more sleep, but I think sleep really is very underrated and people do a lot of things that can jeopardise their sleep. Having an early night and getting a good night's sleep is a real treat and really good for you. So just go to bed, or have a nap. Let your body rest. It's amazing when you get on board with it.
