Lisa, CEO of Bright Beginnings, shares her 5 wellbeing essentials.
My collection of animals - three ragdoll cats and a 6 month old husky puppy - certainly keeps me busy (and costs a small fortune) but they are a special part of the family and they make life more fulfilling. Stroking the cats’ soft fur and feeling the vibration of their purrs, or having a cuddle with the (quite large) puppy really helps to lower my stress levels and bring me back to the present moment. Plus, having the puppy ensures I’m out walking every day now; exploring Guernsey’s beautiful coastline with her is a wonderful way to stay happy and healthy.
The transition from evening to night has always been my favourite time of day. This is when I most enjoy being outdoors, enjoying nature’s shift from light to dark. The twilight zone is a truly magical few moments of reflection on the day that’s about to end and anticipation of the coming night. Watching the last rays of light fade into the dark blue of night’s canvas and seeing the first stars appear, allows you to fully appreciate the wonder of nature and feel how small your part in it is. Taking ten minutes to appreciate this special time is a daily privilege.
There is nothing more special or grounding than spending time with children and seeing the world through their eyes. Due to my role at Bright Beginnings, I am extremely lucky to participate in lots of children’s joy of just being little. For them, everything is new and exciting, and they are constantly watching, playing and learning. As adults, it is easy to forget about the many little wonders in our daily environment, but simply observing the children or taking part in their imaginative games reawakens my own curiosity and child-like wonder. Children give us so much more vitality than they often get credit for!
In the long winter months, after a busy day of mummying and work, I like to treat myself with a long bath. Unwinding with a book, or just taking time to soak the day away in the sanctuary of my bathroom helps to rest my mind and bring me back to myself. Now that spring has arrived, a sea swim followed by a hot bath will be the ultimate treat. and if it’s a full moon and there’s a gentle wind, then church candles and an open window to let in the moonlight create a very relaxing retreat.
As a self-diagnosed neat freak, everything needs to be in its place at all times. However, having a child and four pets means living in a space that I don’t have much control over. Making a conscious effort to worry less about the mess is allowing more time to focus on what really matters. Children need to have opportunities to create and have adventure, and the puppy loves to steal cardboard and rip it into hundreds of tiny pieces - but I take a deep breath and try to put it in perspective! The chaos can feel big, but it’s all temporary and one day I will crave these little moments.
