10 Ways To Move For £1 And Support The Pink Ladies This October

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, bringing an extra reminder of the importance of getting to know our bodies, being aware of any changes and getting anything unusual checked.

Here in Guernsey, the Pink Ladies work all year round to support people affected by breast cancer across the Bailiwick, as well as raising awareness of breast health and the importance of early detection. And this October, they are encouraging everyone to Move Your Bits.

The idea is simple: get moving, try something new and enjoy the benefits that being active can bring to both our physical and mental wellbeing, while raising awareness and supporting the local breast cancer community.

So, from 4 to 28 October, local instructors and coaches are offering a mix of classes and taster sessions for just £1. There’s everything from yoga and Pilates to dancing, walking netball and walking football, so it’s a great opportunity to give something new a go.

Here’s what’s happening...

1. Try Walking Netball

Love netball but not so keen on running around the court? Walking Netball takes the traditional game at a slower pace, making it a good option if you haven’t played for years, or have never played at all.

Sunday 4 October, 10.00am – 11.00am
Elizabeth College Sports Hall

25 Years Of The Pink Ladies

The Pink Ladies was founded in Guernsey in 2001 by a group of women going through breast cancer treatment who wanted to support others facing the same experience.

This year marks the charity’s 25th anniversary, and that support remains at the heart of what they do. The Pink Ladies provides practical and financial help to people affected by breast cancer across the Bailiwick, including a Wellbeing Grant which can be used towards things such as complementary therapies, nutrition and keeping active during or after treatment.

They also work closely with Guernsey’s Breast Clinic and help fund projects that improve the experience of local breast cancer patients.

If you’d like to support their work, you can get involved through fundraising, volunteering, events or donations. And if you or someone close to you has been affected by breast cancer, you can get in touch to find out more about the support available locally.

Meet My Breast Friend

We all know we should check our breasts regularly, but remembering to actually do it is another matter.

That’s where My Breast Friend comes in. Created by Guernsey-born breast cancer survivor Gemma Ainger, the free app sends you a monthly reminder to check, lets you keep track of when you’ve done it and helps you understand what to look and feel for.

It’s a simple way to make checking part of your regular routine and get to know what’s normal for you. Find out more and download My Breast Friend here.
