In the run up to Small Business Saturday, we are supporting local small businesses by sharing their stories with you.
Have you been in to the new Maison Demain Home shop in Town? A recent addition to the High Street, next to Christie's on The Pollet, the store brings beautiful, neutral on-trend yet timeless home accessories to us here on island.
And speaking of surprises, we were amazed to learn that this isn't actually Becky's day job! Want to hear more? Read on, as Becky shares her story with us...
"When I was about 11 or 12 and I got to choose the colour of my bedroom, I chose burgundy walls and a purple ceiling! Let’s just say my tastes have changed a bit since then, and my passion for home décor and design really began when we bought our first house, back in 2003 and I fell in love with making it feel homely and peaceful - a sanctuary to come home to really.
I did an online interior design course and then chose to add an online shop to support the styling as I couldn't find what I wanted locally. The physical shop evolved from the success of a pop up shop I did earlier that same year. I love interiors, looking at pictures, designing new schemes and creating unique and welcoming spaces - its an evolving thing too, I can't stick with the same decor for more than a few months at a time!"
"I understand that it's not always easy to know where to start when renovating or redecorating, so I help my customers to envision and create the rooms they are dreaming of. Sometimes this may be just an area in one room and sometimes it might be a whole house!
I love using natural materials like stone, wood, cottons and linens. I think they give texture and warmth to a scheme. I also love to use greenery in pretty much every room. As my style is mainly neutral, I like to use natural textures to make a scheme feel more interesting.
My favourite product at the moment is the big Darcy stone vase - I love how big it is and the unique texture." (Editor's note - Us too!)
"The best bit so far has to be the opening our shop in Le Pollet! It took several months of preparation and long days of building and unpacking, but we got there... with the support of family and friends, especially my wonderful hubby who was responsible for a whole lot of lugging, painting, drilling, grafting to help me pull it all together!
But as well as being the highlight, opening the shop has been the toughest part of the Maison Demain Home journey so far! I always liked the idea of having a shop, but it has certainly been crazy at times. The amount of work that goes on in the background isn't always recognised and it has been quite overwhelming at times."
"Customers do love being able to shop local. That's not always easy. Living on an island, there's a limited marketplace and you can't always find what you want. I recognised this when buying our first home and ever since then I have wanted to be able to provide something unique and different to fellow home lovers here.
I love it when customers get joy from our products and being in the shop. Being able to provide a service of sourcing items and helping style my customers' homes is great and extremely rewarding - it makes all of the hard work worthwhile.
As a mum, I believe that every child living in our islands deserves the best possible education, no matter what their circumstances. I sit on the board of Every Child Our Future, a local charity supporting children and their families to have the best start in life. It's a charity that enhances literacy and numeracy, and helps teachers and parents during the crucial early years to ensure that no child gets left behind."
"This isn't my day job! Although I do work in the shop from time to time, I also own another business providing HR consulting services where you'll find me most of the time. When I'm not working I love spending time with my family and friends and walking our two dogs."
How inviting does this Beanbag Chair look? It is made from 100% shorn Macedonian sheepskin and makes us just want to sink into this at the end of the day with a magazine and a cup of tea, and maybe just not get up again until winter is over!
