10 Things You May Not Know About Guernsey's Young Business Group

Guernsey has a way of keeping things quietly understated, doesn’t it? Even if you’ve lived here for years, there’s always something new to discover - and the Young Business Group is a good example of that. Or maybe it’s something you’ve heard about, but you're not really sure if it’s for you.

Spoiler alert: it probably is.

With members from every background - retail, hospitality, media, advertising, IT, legal, finance and more - YBG is far more diverse, friendly and accessible than many people realise. It’s a genuine cross-section of island life, powered by open-minded people who simply enjoy learning, connecting and sharing ideas.

Here’s what you need to know.

1.  There’s No Real Age Limit.

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Young Business Group is that it’s only for “young people”. In reality, there is no age limit. YBG welcomes professionals of all ages, as well as businesses that are young or in their early stages. The focus is on fresh ideas, open-mindedness, and a shared desire to grow and access our wide network.

2.  It All Started with the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce.

Founded in 1961 by the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce, YBG was created to reach and uplift the island’s emerging business voices. Today, it continues to inspire the next generation while staying deeply connected to Guernsey’s wider business community.

3.  It’s Proudly Cross-Industry.

YBG brings together professionals from every corner of the island’s economy - finance, hospitality, marketing, tech, creative industries, engineering, the States, entrepreneurship and more. This mix is what makes the group so informative and energising.

4.  Members Enjoy an Event Every Month.

YBG hosts at least one event every month, designed to inspire, inform, and entertain. From three-course dinners and breakfast meetings to relaxed drinks and hands-on activities that showcase island life, the programme is deliberately varied to suit different interests. To make the group as accessible as possible, YBG also offers free and low-commitment trial events, the perfect way for potential members to get a flavour of the community, the energy, and the value on offer.

5.  Guest Speakers Shine a Light on Local Businesses.

One of YBG’s strengths is its focus on showcasing Guernsey’s diverse industries. Topical guest speakers are invited to share real stories, practical insights, and behind-the-scenes perspectives, giving members an informative and engaging window into the island’s business landscape.

6.  The Quiz and Summer Ball Are Firm Favourites.

Two of the most anticipated dates in the YBG calendar are their famous Quiz and Summer Ball. These open-to-all events blend connection with entertainment, bringing the community together in a relaxed, social atmosphere.

7.  The Bill Green Award Is Its Flagship Celebration of Entrepreneurship.

Running for more than 30 years, the Bill Green Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit provides a platform and shines the spotlight on local individuals who demonstrate innovation, resilience, and ambition. It remains one of Guernsey’s most inspiring business accolades.

8.  YBG Helps Santa at Christmas.

Every year, YBG members (honorary elves) volunteer as Santa’s helpers, hand-writing personalised replies to letters from local children. It’s a long-standing, heartwarming tradition that spreads a little extra magic across the island.

9.  A Volunteer Committee Powers the Group Forward.

A dedicated, voluntary committee keeps the wheels turning behind the scenes - planning events, managing the Bill Green Award, and ensuring every member feels informed, included, and looked after.

10.  Above All, It’s a Welcoming, Enjoyable Community.

YBG is friendly, inclusive, and genuinely fun. Whether someone is new to the island, growing a business, or simply seeking fresh inspiration, it offers an easy-going space to meet people, learn something new, and feel part of something positive.
