Tiffany, Collections Lead for Children & Young People at the Guille-Allès Library, shares her wellbeing essentials.
As someone who works at the Library, it will probably come as no surprise that reading is - of course! - my number one. Whether an audiobook, eBook or a trusty paperback, cosying up with a hot chocolate and your latest adventure; what could be better? Escaping into a different world can be wonderful for the mind, and here at the Library we’re happy to help you find whatever gets you there.
I’ve recently realised that I’m much more likely to relax when doing something creative. Last year I discovered Drink & Draw. No matter your skill level, this weekly life drawing session welcomes all who venture there, and everyone who attends just seems to exude happiness. Iris & Dora is also a wonderful place to sit back, relax (maybe have a snack) and set your creative juices flowing. I think that taking an hour or two to put your mind to something creative can do wonders for your mental health. It allows you to clear your head and just focus on being able to create. If you bring a friend with you, then it’s twice the fun!
A nerdier pastime of mine is sitting down to tackle a puzzle book. Logic puzzles, killer sudokus, I just can’t get enough. Putting your mind to a puzzle, rather than a screen, in the evening can be a great way to unwind while keeping the brain ticking over.
I honestly don’t think I get much happier than when I’m in the company of our canine companions. Last year I made it my resolution to spend more time with dogs, whether by saying hello on walks (with permission, of course), or simply offering to walk my friends’ cute pooches. Quite simply, I think dogs make the world a better place and I try to be around them as much as paw-sible - sorry!
Is there any better feeling than laughing with a loved one? Growing up, my family very much valued humour and it has followed me throughout life. If ever I have a day where I haven’t laughed, I pop on an emergency comedy podcast, or message one of my silly siblings. Laughing, or smiling, truly makes me feel better and I try to make it fill as much of my day as physically possible. Maybe laughter is indeed the best medicine?
