5 Ways To Well with Rebecca Goater

Bex, Director of Network Insurance & Financial Planning, shares her 5 wellbeing essentials.

1.  A Good Night’s Sleep.

Sleep is so important to all of us as it affects brain performance, mood and general health, and I know that I’m one of those people that needs a good night's sleep. I’ve recently started tracking my sleep, and it’s amazing how much it does have an impact. I’m trying to prioritise - where possible - a good night’s sleep and I'm definitely seeing positive results. I’ve set my health app to remind me to go to bed at a suitable time, as well as blocking social media late at night, and I’m noticing the benefits. Of course, I still have a late night (especially at weekend’s), but I find my body copes with this much better if I am consistent the rest of the time.

2.  Know Your Own Limits.

No one knows you better than you know yourself. Listening to your body when it tells you it needs something really can make the difference to physical and mental health. I can be known to burn the candle at both ends, but when I feel that I’m pushing myself too far, I do try and listen and take my foot off the gas. It's easier to do this with some things than others, and work and children can’t always be so flexible, but knowing my limits can still be helpful.

3.  Positive Mental Attitude.

I have always been a big believer in the power of a positive mental attitude, and how looking for and finding joy in the every day / little things in life can really help your mood and mental health on a daily basis. If I appreciate the little wins in life, it really does help to make more days good days. I also try not to let the negative things affect me too much either, though of course, this can be easier said than done on some occasions!

4.  A Good Support Network.

I feel like this is an obvious one, but it’s so important to have people around you that support you! I read somewhere that friends that help you when you’re down are good friends, but the friends that celebrate your successes are the best friends, and I couldn’t agree more. Finding people that you can be yourself around, and who accept you is so key to your mental health. Having young children, it’s also important to have people around you to rely on – as they say, it takes a village! I’ve always been someone who will ask for help when needed, but I know that it can be hard for people to accept help. When it comes to children, the more help the better, I think!

5.  Get Outside.

Whenever I follow my own advice and do this, I am reminded of how effective it is. Fresh air can reset all moods, and, particularly when it’s sunny, it’s one of those small joys that if appreciated can bring great happiness. Naturally, it's harder in the winter, when it’s cold and wet, but I do try and get outside, particularly with the kids, when I can. It sometimes feels like it is going to be hard work, but actually, it’s the easiest way to entertain the children and improve everyone’s moods. With or without kids, I recommed trying to make time to get outside.
