Zoe Ball

If you tune into the Radio 2 morning show, you would not for one minute think that Zoe Ball had confidence issues, but speaking on Desert Island Discs earlier this year she admitted to using alcohol as a prop over the years to help her feel at ease in certain situations

‘It is weird because you do this job and you are talking and you are gregarious and all these things but I am actually quite shy.  ‘If you had had a drink you could be in a room full of people… and you could feel like you could hold your own’.

Her years as a party girl took their toll as she started leaning on alcohol a bit too much.  She sought treatment of her addiction but has been sober for several years now

It may not surprise you to hear that Kayla doesn’t drink alcohol - as a Personal Trainer and fitness entrepreneur, her world revolves around her healthy lifestyle.  She recently shared her reasons for not drinking with her 12.7m Instagram followers, explaining why she hasn’t touched alcohol since she was 19, and sending encouragement to others who don’t want to drink:

“I've tried alcohol before, but I've just never liked it. I have also always been really into sport… so I wasn't interested in drinking and I didn't have time to feel sick or hungover.”

“I know from personal experience that when you don't drink, people are often really confused by your choices, sometimes they look at you like you're strange or different. I'm here to tell you that if you don't want to drink, you do NOT have to.  You don't NEED to feel pressured to drink alcohol if you don't want to. Please don't feel weird if you don't enjoy alcohol, because you are not the only one!'

Bradley Cooper

Despite his roles in A star is Born and The Hangover movie trilogy, Bradley Cooper gave up alcohol when he was 29.  In a 2014 interview with GQ magazine he said his reason for abstinence was driven by fear that ‘If I continued (drinking), I was going to sabotage my whole life’.

He went on to say that The best thing I can do is embrace who I am and then do that to the fullest extent, and then whatever happens, happens’ adding that his misuse of alcohol, and other illicit substances, was moving him ‘further away from fulfilling any potential I would have.’

With hits like A Star Is Born coming after he decided to say no to alcohol, it seems like he made the right choice!

Fearne Cotton gave up alcohol over a decade ago, telling Glamour Magazine ‘I wasn't a big drinker before so I found it quite easy to give up completely - 'and now I feel bloody brilliant.’  She has spoken often about her battle with anxiety and depression, and although not short of cash, she prefers to spend her money on weekly therapy sessions.

Her husband Jessie, son of Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, embraced sobriety 8 years ago, and Fearne paid tribute to him a few months ago on her Instagram: stating ‘This brilliant man has now been sober for 8 years.  He's been focused and committed… we love you to the moon and back.’

Anne spoke of her decision to give up alcohol in an interview on Lorraine, explaining that she has chosen quality time over hangovers by staying sober until her son Jonathon, now 4, turns 18 years old.

'The time I have with him is really precious… and I found my time with him was getting impacted.  Not necessary by the drinking, as I never went out of control around him, but I hate to say it, as you get older the hangovers get really bad - I had to make a choice and I chose mornings.

She jokingly stated that she will continue to love an alcohol free life until he is 18.  She intends to: ‘Raise a proper, good human being, get him off to college and then move to a vineyard and spend the back half of my life completely sloshed, happy, sun-drenched. That's the plan!'

Calvin Harris

As one of the highest paid DJ’s on the planet and a super successful music producer, there must be many opportunities for Calvin Harris to party.  Despite, or maybe because of this, Calvin revealed in an interview with the BBC that he stopped drinking when he was 24, explaining:

‘I wasn't an alcoholic or anything like that, but it was clearly affecting what I do.  My live shows are a million times better now. The fact that people would pay to see a show and I'd not be on form - it wasn't fair. It's not fair on anyone.

And ever since (giving up alcohol), I've been working every single day. I haven't needed a recovery day from getting a hangover, or anything like that’.
